¿Who is the Immigrant?

Today the so called Arizona Immigration Law SB-1070 was partially put on hold by judge Susan Bolton. The law which entails the provision of controlling undocumented immigration to the state by a series of measures, among them racial and class profiling in order to detect and deport "illegal aliens", was scheduled to take effect today.

The legal process may take months, but this gives President Obama the chance to push immigration reforms into Congress. Hopefully this is no too politically costly for him. With a population feeling too much the effects of the economic crisis, anti-immigrant sentiment is rampant. However, there is the hope that U.S. will acknowledge its immigrant nature as a nation, and act in consequence. Hopefully public opinion turns favorable to an immigration reform.

Immigrant Detention Centers in Maricopa County, Arizona

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that there was enough room for "illegal immigrants" at the detention Centers in Maricopa county. These are the conditions of such centers, in the middle of the Arizona desert. Hope Arpaio has tried this hospitality himself.

Parable of the provincial and the cosmopolitan virgins
Carlos Monsivais
Translation: Antonieta Mercado

A virgin from the country side traveled to the big city to say her farewells to her yearly provider of pious deeds, who she believed was a bit ill. While she was looking for him, a cosmopolitan virgin got annoyed with the provincial virgin’s humble and merciful looks. What do you do? Asked the cosmopolitan arrogantly. Timid, the provincial virgin answered: “I never have bad thoughts, and I know how to do good deeds, I like to help the sick and…” The cosmopolitan virgin looked at her from head to toe saying: “and how many languages do you use to communicate with the angels?” There was a total silence. Encouraged by her success, the inquisitorial virgin continued: “Could you tell me your idea of sin in a brilliant aphorism?” There was no response either. Excited, proud of her worldly knowledge of divinity, the cosmopolitan virgin shouted: “I will be damned if this is not the most stupid creature that I have ever known!” After that there was lightening and thunder, and at the end, the cosmopolitan virgin was lying at the floor, torn to exactly six symmetrical pieces. Whispering a prayer, the provincial virgin kindly said good bye to the symmetrical remains of the other virgin, promising never to challenge the heavens, not even as a joke.
